Permian–Triassic phylogenetic and morphologic evolution of rhynchonellide brachiopods

چکیده

Abstract The Rhynchonellida is a major group of brachiopods that survived the “big five” mass extinctions and flourished after Permian/Triassic (P/Tr) crisis. However, phylogenetic character evolution in across P/Tr transition poorly understood. In view widespread homoplasy this order, we employ tip-dated Bayesian analysis to reconstruct relationships for late Permian–Triassic rhynchonellides. same data were also analyzed using three other methods: undated Bayesian, equal-weighting, implied-weighting parsimony. Compared with trees generated by methods, those constructed tip-dating best account are closer previous assumptions on order. Based analyses multiple trees, increase lineage richness occurred Early early Middle Triassic. Also, Anisian almost reached highest level seen According fossil records, pronounced reduction shell size development ornamentation extinction, which largely due loss large highly sculptured genera diversification small-sized weakly ornamented genera. Ancestral-state estimation ornamentation, coupled comparisons characters, indicate Early–Middle Triassic mature “small-sized taxa” may have characters displayed juveniles their ancestors. This suggests these genera, paedomorphosis was possibly strategy survive diversify harsh environment extinction.

‘Flapping valves’ in brachiopods

M. J. S. Rudwick and others postulate ‘rhythmic-flow’ feeding for the Permian richthofeniacean bi-achiopods, whereas R. E. Grant claims that they fed by normal ciliary action. Suspension-feeding has two components, current generation and food capture; normal brachiopod lophophores d o both, but this is neither universal nor compulsory among animals. Opening and closing the richthofeniid shell g...

Combined Analysis of Extant Rhynchonellida (Brachiopoda) using Morphological and Molecular Data

Independent molecular and morphological phylogenetic analyses have often produced discordant results for certain groups which, for fossil-rich groups, raises the possibility that morphological data might mislead in those groups for which we depend upon morphology the most. Rhynchonellide brachiopods, with more than 500 extinct genera but only 19 extant genera represented today, provide an oppor...

Scale-dependence of Cope's rule in body size evolution of Paleozoic brachiopods.

The average body size of brachiopods from a single habitat type increased gradually by more than two orders of magnitude during their initial Cambrian-Devonian radiation. This increase occurred nearly in parallel across all major brachiopod clades (classes and orders) and is consistent with Cope's rule: the tendency for size to increase over geological time. The increase is not observed within ...

Phylogenetic Differential Evolution

This paper presents a new technique for optimizing binary problems with building blocks. The authors have developed a different approach to existing Estimation of Distribution Algorithms (EDAs). Our technique, called Phylogenetic Differential Evolution (PhyDE), combines the Phylogenetic Algorithm and the Differential Evolution Algorithm. The first one is employed to identify the building blocks...
